Custom handmade rug after Theo van Doesburg‘s painting Dance I (Stained Glass)
A bold and joyful interplay of geometry and color, this handmade rug is based on Theo van Doesburg’s 1917 stained glass work Dance I. Pure forms—circles, triangles, rectangles—interlock in a vibrant rhythm of yellow, red, and blue, framed by deep black outlines. The result is a composition that radiates structure and movement at once.
Its energy and clarity make it a striking piece in any interior, especially for those who appreciate early modern abstraction and the legacy of De Stijl.

About the artwork this rug is inspired on: Dance I (Stained Glass)
Theo van Doesburg’s Dance I (1917), now in the Kröller-Müller Museum, is a stained glass design that distills dance into color and form. With no figures in sight, movement is suggested purely through the dynamic arrangement of geometric shapes.
Using primary colors and thick black contours, Van Doesburg creates an abstract rhythm that reflects his vision of universal harmony—an ideal central to his role in founding the De Stijl movement.
About the artist: Theo van Doesburg
“When contemplating a work of art it is possible to perceive if it has been created according to the eye or to the spirit, in other words, if it projects three-dimensional reality or spiritual n-dimensionality.”
Theo van Doesburg
Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) was a Dutch artist, designer, and visionary who co-founded the De Stijl movement alongside Piet Mondrian. His work is known for geometric precision, primary colors, and a disciplined harmony that influenced modern art, design, and architecture.
Originally influenced by Van Gogh and the Amsterdam Impressionists, van Doesburg shifted toward abstraction after reading Kandinsky. He believed in art as a means to express pure ideas—using line, color, and form to achieve universal balance.
In 1922, he brought De Stijl to the Bauhaus in Weimar, expanding its influence across disciplines. He collaborated with major figures like Sophie Taeuber-Arp, El Lissitzky, and Kurt Schwitters, bridging modernism and Dada while staying rooted in structure and clarity.
His works—now housed in MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and Stedelijk—remain a testament to the power of reduction, rhythm, and refined form.
