Custom handmade rug after Theo van Doesburg‘s painting Simultaneous Counter Composition
This handmade rug reinterprets Theo van Doesburg’s Simultaneous Counter-Composition from 1930. Four bold squares—red, yellow, blue, and black—tilt gently across a quiet white field. Black lines slice through them with purpose, uniting the elements in calm rhythm. It is De Stijl at its most distilled: geometry, balance, and pure abstraction.
Simple shapes. Primary colors. Just enough motion to keep the eye curious. A design that feels both playful and grounded—alive in any space.

About the artwork this rug is inspired on: Simultaneous Counter Composition
Created in 1930, Simultaneous Counter-Composition marked one of van Doesburg’s last major works. With it, he redefined the De Stijl language by introducing diagonal lines, setting himself apart from Mondrian’s strict horizontals and verticals. The painting captures his pursuit of harmony through reduction—using only squares, lines, and pure color.
About the artist: Theo van Doesburg
“When contemplating a work of art it is possible to perceive if it has been created according to the eye or to the spirit, in other words, if it projects three-dimensional reality or spiritual n-dimensionality.”
Theo van Doesburg
Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) was a Dutch artist, designer, and visionary who co-founded the De Stijl movement alongside Piet Mondrian. His work is known for geometric precision, primary colors, and a disciplined harmony that influenced modern art, design, and architecture.
Originally influenced by Van Gogh and the Amsterdam Impressionists, van Doesburg shifted toward abstraction after reading Kandinsky. He believed in art as a means to express pure ideas—using line, color, and form to achieve universal balance.
In 1922, he brought De Stijl to the Bauhaus in Weimar, expanding its influence across disciplines. He collaborated with major figures like Sophie Taeuber-Arp, El Lissitzky, and Kurt Schwitters, bridging modernism and Dada while staying rooted in structure and clarity.
His works—now housed in MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and Stedelijk—remain a testament to the power of reduction, rhythm, and refined form.
