Custom handmade rug after Piet Mondrian‘s painting New York City I
“New York City I is one of Mondrian’s most intriguing and seminal works from his years in America. This abstract representation of the New York skyline captures the immediacy and energy of the city and serves as a testament to Mondrian’s lifelong pursuit of pure abstraction.”
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
This bespoke rug is inspired by New York City I, one of Piet Mondrian’s final and most energetic compositions — a love letter to the vibrant pulse of a city that deeply moved him.
It is an artwork that does not simply depict New York; it feels like it. The city’s grid, its rhythm, its colours, its verticality — all translated by Mondrian into a choreography of lines and hues. Our handmade rug captures this spirit with refined textile clarity, where delicate lines in red, blue, yellow and white dance across a warm ivory surface, forming a pattern that is structured yet wonderfully alive.
This piece brings a sense of movement and openness into the room. It is modern in its essence, timeless in its appeal — the kind of rug that brings both quiet strength and joyful lightness into a space.
Lovingly handmade and fully customisable in both technique and size: available as hand knotted, hand tufted, or kilim.

About the artwork this rug is inspired on: New York City I
Mondrian created New York City I in 1942, shortly after arriving in Manhattan. He was invigorated by the city’s rhythm — its jazz, its architecture, its sheer scale — and it shows. The black lines of his earlier works dissolve into coloured ones, and the classic grid gains a new lightness and complexity.
What is especially moving about this painting is that it was left unfinished in his studio when he passed. The strips of coloured tape he used to test his ideas remained untouched — capturing a moment of creative flux. It is a rare and intimate glimpse into the artist’s mind, where clarity and experimentation existed side by side.
About the artist: Piet Mondrian
“The emotion of beauty is always obscured by the appearance of the object. Therefore, the object must be eliminated from the picture.”
Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian was a visionary Dutch artist who reshaped the language of modern art. His journey from serene landscapes to the bold geometry of neoplasticism reflects a deep, deliberate evolution—one that has quietly yet powerfully influenced architecture, design, and visual culture for over a century.
Mondrian’s compositions, with their pure lines, primary colours, and quiet sense of order, hold a striking emotional presence. They are at once deeply modern and utterly timeless—works that do not just decorate a space, but elevate it. As art critic Roberta Smith wrote, “Mondrian remains one of the most radical artists of his time,” creating paintings with “the tightness and authority of icons.”
His legacy lives on not only in the most prestigious museums around the world, but also in the way his vision continues to inspire clarity, intention, and elegance in today’s interiors.
And now, this vision can be woven into your space, through a custom handmade rug that captures the strength and serenity of Mondrian’s art.
